We have two new art rooms thanks to the Measure A Bond and they are gorgeous! Lots of space, storage, sinks, perfect lighting, and a kiln area to make any potter jealous!
A new Middle School Ceramics class has started this semester and students seem very excited to have time each week devoted to clay. The course was approved by the PAUSD Board last spring and is now being implemented at Jordan.
In Ceramics students are happily becoming familiar with the slab roller, which rolls out clay as easily as a pasta machine. For the first two projects they are applying texture and porcelain slip to their pieces to experiment with basic decorative elements in ceramics. Students are working with an earthenware red clay that is high fired to retain its beautiful rich color, then they are adding a complementary glaze color to enrich their ceramic pieces.
Students in Ceramics and Art 1B are taking photos of their work to keep a digital documentation of their projects. Photos are saved to their Google Drives and shared with Mrs. Goldman for an assessment.
In both classes students used iPads to take the photos and then uploaded them into Skitch, an Evernote product. Students used arrows and circles to point to elements and principles of art and write a brief self-evaluation that was shared with Mrs. Goldman. See the samples here.
